Treating varicose veins with less pain DAMERON HOSPITAL’S Pacific Heart and Vascular Cardiac Care Center is the first health care provider to offer patients in the San Joaquin County area a new, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that is safe, effective and allows a rapid return to normal daily activities. Venous reflux disease, or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), affects more than 30 million people in the U.S. It occurs when valves in the veins of the lower leg no longer function properly. Veins have one-way valves that help keep blood flowing back to the heart. When these valves fail, blood begins to collect in the leg veins rather than continuing up toward your heart. The veins then enlarge and are commonly referred to as varicose veins. Advanced adhesive The VenaSeal™ closure system is a new, minimally invasive procedure that uses an advanced medical adhesive to close the diseased vein in patients with CVI. “CVI can result in lifestyle-limiting lower leg pain, swelling, skin damage and even ulcerations,” says Daren Primack, MD, Pacific Heart and Vascular cardiologist and Dameron Hospital’s Director of Vascular Intervention. “The VenaSeal closure system is a new and innovative treatment option that improves blood flow by closing the diseased vein. The system has demonstrated excellent clinical results and allows patients to resume their normal activities as soon as possible.” Less time, less pain The VenaSeal closure system is the only procedure available that uses medical adhesive to close the vein. Patients treated with this system often have minimal to no bruising and can return quickly to normal activities. The procedure takes less than an hour to complete and is performed on an outpatient basis. “Traditional procedures to close diseased veins have included heat-based treatments that require multiple injections of local anesthetic,” explains Dr. Primack. “The VenaSeal system eliminates the need for the local anesthetic, which significantly reduces patient discomfort. This is an exciting new option for patients that will give them lasting results with minimal risk of complications and minimal pain.” VenaSeal™ now available in Stockton As the VenaSeal system applies the adhesive within the diseased section of a vein, the vein walls are sealed together. 6 HEALTH OUTLOOK Daren Primack, MD VenaSeal™ closure system
