Dameron Hospital | Health Outlook | Fall 2020

FOR YEARS, movies have featured robots as charming sidekicks or frightening villains. They have triggered our imaginations on what the future might be like when technology enables us to attain that level of sophistication in artificial intelligence and robotic function. Though we’re not there yet, robots have already been integrated into industries like manufacturing and also serve a vital role in helping to advance the capabilities of modern medicine. We’re delighted to announce that Dameron Hospital has just acquired the latest da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System, bringing the most advanced technology to surgeons and patients in the area. A new level of care Minimally invasive surgery is now possible in a manner never before experienced at Dameron. With the surgeon sitting at a console just a few feet from the patient, the da Vinci System translates the surgeon’s hand movements into corresponding micro-movements of the surgical instruments. This system enables physicians to perform delicate and complex operations through tiny incisions with enhanced precision, dexterity and control — with the benefit of a high-definition, three- dimensional vision system. We have joined the robotic age “Even during these challenging times, we believe this was an important investment into our community that gives patients access to the highest levels of surgical excellence right here in Stockton,” says Dameron Hospital Board President Bill Trezza. “Increasing healthcare systems’ overall capabilities and capacity to care for patients in our community is something that our board is passionate about. Bringing Dameron online with robotic surgery was the right thing to do during this time of extraordinary community need.” “This new system is the latest generation of the da Vinci System and is the most advanced robotic surgery system now available in Stockton,” says Tarig Samarkandy, MD, a general surgeon who is a fellowship-trained expert in robotic surgery, chair of Dameron’s Robotics Committee and director of our Bariatric Surgery program. “It enhances our ability to perform minimally invasive procedures on a broader range of patients with different surgical needs,” he says. “From the patient’s perspective, receiving a minimally invasive procedure results in less pain, faster recovery and a faster return to normal life. Our new surgical capabilities at Dameron deliver a real benefit to our community and enhances the quality of patients’ lives.” “The addition of the da Vinci System to Dameron Hospital is one component of our strategic plan to make a positive impact on the health of those who live in San Joaquin County and the surrounding areas,” says Daniel Wolcott, president of Dameron Hospital and Adventist Health Lodi Memorial Hospital.
