14 HEALTH OUTLOOK FOR many people struggling with obesity and health issues, making the decision to address their problem with a bariatric weight-loss procedure is deeply personal and requires considerable research and soul-searching. In this unusual case, it wasn’t just emotional support that was received; it was Changing lives — two at a time someone to literally share the journey to better health with. Heather Burrell and her daughter, Tyffani Cameron, had both been dealing with weight and health issues for quite some time when they sought out Tarig Samarkandy, MD, bariatric surgeon and director of the Dameron Hospital Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Program. Both mother and daughter had conducted extensive research in weight- loss alternatives and their relative risks and benefits. Both had tried a variety of diet programs, but they either didn’t work or didn’t last. As time went on, chronic obesity took its toll on their health.
